Walker - Byrd collection, 1918-1992.

This collection consists of a significant body of documentation which was gathered by Martha Byrd in conjunction with her research of the life and military career of General Kenneth Walker. Included in these materials is the draft of a manuscript written by Martha Byrd on the life of General Kenneth; correspondence and newspaper clippings; articles, interviews and personal letters written by Kenneth Walker; copy of a scrapbook containing photographs of Walker's family, his childhood, his military activities; testimonials/correspondence from people responding to requests from Mrs. Byrd to relate their memories of General Walker; and the "Monihan Papers" consisting of correspondence, map and articles related to Gene Monihan's research of the Rabaul bombing raid and the downing of Walker's airplane. Mrs. Byrd's biography of Kenneth Walker, entitled "Kenneth N. Walker: Airpower's Untempered Crusader," was published postumously in 1997.

Kenneth Walker was one of the leading authorities on air power in the years before World War II and later became a key player in the formation of strategic bombardment doctrine. He enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1917 and received his flying wings and commission in 1918. In the early 1930s, Walker attended the Air Corps Tactical School where he participated in a study on the accuracy of low-altitude bombing.
